Caves of Hotton
From Izier (municipality of Durbuy), it takes about 30 minutes by car to reach the Caves of Hotton. Grotten van Hotton lie beneath the landscape of Hotton and form a clear contrast with the forests and valleys visible above ground. The visit takes place as a guided tour through a limestone cave system located more than sixty metres below the surface. You descend by stairs into large chambers and narrow passages, passing stalactites, stalagmites and rock walls shaped by water over time.
Shared Discovery
At the lowest level, an underground river flows through the cave. The temperature remains around 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year, making the difference with the outside weather noticeable. A tour lasts approximately one hour and takes place in a group with a guide. The pace is fixed, making it less of an individual exploration and more of a shared discovery. Children often respond strongly to the height differences, the sound of dripping water and the awareness of standing deep beneath the Ardennes landscape. It requires some attention and listening, but remains manageable in length.
At the entrance above ground, the atmosphere changes. There is daylight, open space and a cafeteria with a terrace overlooking the green valley around Hotton. Many families stay here for a while after the tour. In addition to the café, there is a small shop selling souvenirs and regional products. For children, there is a modest play area near the reception area, where they often release some energy after the underground visit.
Because the cave tour takes place largely indoors, it is less dependent on the weather. On warm days, the cool temperature underground feels pleasant; on rainy days, it offers shelter without spending the entire afternoon indoors. Opening hours vary by season.

For families with primary school-aged children, this outing offers a calm yet impressive activity in the Durbuy region. Younger children often experience it as an exciting underground adventure, while older children and teenagers tend to focus on the scale of the spaces and the explanation of how the landscape was formed. It is less about free play and more about observing and listening together. The combination of a compact guided tour and a relaxed moment outside makes it suitable as a half-day activity during a stay in Izier (municipality of Durbuy). Where above ground you mainly see forest and rolling hills, this visit reveals how the same landscape continues below: darker, quieter, and shaped by water and time. For those seeking variety between outdoor activities and something more reflective, this can be a logical part of the week.
