Kayaking in the Ardennes

Kayaking in the Ardennes - Image

Kayaking is part of the Ardennes experience. In the area around Domaine Le Boulac, it's a popular way to be active outdoors and explore the region from the water. The area around Durbuy lends itself well to this, with several rivers, routes and put-in points within easy reach of the park. Most kayaking trips take place on the Ourthe, a river that winds quietly through the landscape and passes several villages. The Amblève is also used for kayaking, though it depends more on water levels. Which river is suitable varies by season and by day.

How kayaking typically works here

In this region, kayaking usually follows a straightforward principle. You drive to the endpoint of the route first, for example in Durbuy, Barvaux or Bomal-sur-Ourthe and park your car there. The operator then takes you upstream by minibus to the starting point. From there, you kayak back at your own pace to where your car is waiting. Along the way, there are various spots on the riverbank where you can pull in briefly. Some people stop for a short break; others combine the kayaking with a bite to eat or a drink at a riverside terrace. This makes the trip feel less like a fixed route and gives you room to set your own pace. Almost all operators offer a waterproof barrel to rent. These are typically used for a towel, phone, wallet or some food for along the way. Bringing a bottle of water is standard practice, especially on warmer days.

Season & conditions

Kayaking is highly dependent on conditions. After periods of heavy rainfall, water levels can be too high and certain routes may be temporarily closed. In dry summers, water levels can drop too low, making some stretches unnavigable. This varies by river and sometimes even by day.
