Le Labyrinthe de Barvaux

From Izier (municipality of Durbuy), it takes about 15 minutes to drive to Le Labyrinthe de Barvaux. On the edge of Barvaux-sur-Ourthe, a large maze is created every summer in a cornfield. Each year, the site features a new theme, reflected in small challenges and playful elements along the way. The maze consists of tall corn plants with pathways cut between them. Once inside, orientation quickly disappears. Directions seem logical until they lead to dead ends, and intersections naturally prompt discussion. It is not an attraction with a fixed route; you find your way together.

A visit begins at the reception area, where the theme is briefly explained. Afterwards, you enter the field independently. At first, it feels manageable, but the deeper you go into the maze, the harder it becomes to determine exactly where you are. Children often take the lead in choosing directions. Parents follow, discuss options, and sometimes turn back. Searching and making decisions together form a large part of the experience.

The theme

Along the way, thematic elements or small assignments interrupt the route. As a result, it is not only about walking, but also about observing and pausing. The pace is entirely up to each family: some move through purposefully, while others are more easily surprised by a wrong turn. Because the maze is located in open countryside, the weather plays a clear role. On warm summer days, temperatures between the corn can rise quickly. On milder days, it feels like an active walk with playful elements. In rainy weather, the paths may become softer and muddy.

Afterwards, visitors return to the entrance area, where a terrace is available. Families often sit here for a while, while children use up their last energy in the open space near the exit.

The duration of the visit varies depending on pace and visitor numbers. On average, expect to spend between one and a half and three hours.

Families

For families with primary school-aged children, this outing often works well, as cooperation and joint decision-making are central. Younger children mainly experience the feeling of getting lost among tall plants, while older children enjoy developing strategies and remembering routes. It is less focused on free play and more on searching together. In the Durbuy region, the maze represents a typical summer activity: temporary, outdoors, weather-dependent, and active enough to fill an afternoon.
