MTB Route Along the Megaliths — 27 km
The "Langs de Megalieten" (Along the Megaliths) route is an official mountain bike loop around Barvaux-sur-Ourthe in the Ardennes. The trail starts at Parc de Juliénas and forms a circuit of around 27 kilometres through woodland and open landscape toward Wéris, home to the region's well-known megalithic stones. From Domaine Le Boulac in Izier, the starting point is around 13 kilometres away approximately 17 minutes by car.
After leaving Barvaux, the route quickly heads into the forest. The elevation makes itself felt almost immediately, with a succession of climbs and descents. The surface is predominantly unpaved throughout: forest tracks, field paths and gravel sections alternate regularly. It's not a technically extreme route, but the elevation gain sets the pace.
An average riding time of three hours
In the open sections toward Wéris, the character of the landscape shifts. The terrain opens up and between the ridgelines lie the prehistoric stone formations that give the route its name. This makes the loop not only a physical challenge but also a visually distinctive ride. The route is waymarked and designed as a loop, so you naturally return to the starting point. Average riding time is around three hours, depending on pace and stops. Those looking for a longer outing can combine it with additional routes. The surface consists mainly of forest and field tracks. In dry conditions the route rides relatively easily; in wetter weather the terrain demands more effort and control. The area is accessible year-round.
